Der Traffikant | The Tobacconist
finalist "Vienna Film Music Award 2019"
This scene is the emotional conclusion of protagonist Franz Huchel's journey set during the rise of Nazis
in Austria. After the death of tobacconist Otto Trsnjek, who gave Franz shelter in his little shop, he says farewell
one last time with an act of dangerous bravery. We also see last pictures of his remaining closest ones: Anezka, his true love, as well as his concerned
mother.
His fate
remains unclear.
I tried to bind these 5 minutes together in a way that makes the scene work without the remaining two hours of the film. Instead of focussing
on the (obviously) evil Nazis or other distractions, I layed the focus on Franz:
A young man, who cares about nothing but the relationships
to those close
to him.
He may seem thoughtless, but only has good
intentions
in his heart. The always moving
and driving
melodic and harmonic lines drift
apart
like Franz and his mysterious lover, and in the end stand still in a bitonal, unresolved
manner; just like the fate of Franz.
